Are drop off times flexible?

Regular attendance and consistent routines help support children's learning, friendships, and sense of belonging within our school community. Families are expected to:Arrive on time for drop-off and pick-upLeave after drop-off. Parents should not linger nearby or join the class group unless previously agreed with the teachersNotify staff via Brightwheel if your child will be absent prior to class beginningEnsure your child has eaten, used the restroom, and is dressed appropriately for the days weather and activities
Class will depart from the drop-off location approximately 5-10 minutes after the scheduled class start time. Late arrivals disrupt the class rhythm and the teaching staff. We kindly ask that you make every effort to arrive and pick up your child on time. 
In the case of late arrival, you will need to communicate with the teacher through Brightwheel to locate the group and hike your child into the class location. Please note that if you are more than 15 minutes late to pick up your child, you will be charged a late fee of $35.

What does a typical day of your school-year program look like?

What dates does your program run for?

Our school calendar runs on a 34-week school year, beginning on September 9, 2026, and ending on June 11, 2027. Please note, school is closed for the following dates:Yom Kippur, September 21, 2026NJEA Conference, November 3 - 6, 2026 Thanksgiving Break, November 24 - 27, 2026Winter Break, December 23, 2026 - January 1, 2027Presidents' Day, February 15 - 17, 2027Spring Break, April 15 - 23, 2027Memorial Day, May 31, 2027
In addition to Summer Camp, we will have Camp days available for most of the above closures through our sister school, Ventures in Nature.

How do you teach respect for the natural environment?

Respect for the natural world is a core value of Trails for Kids.
We teach children to be thoughtful stewards of the environments we visit by following Leave No Trace principles and practicing care for the land, plants, animals, and one another.
Children are encouraged to:Stay on designated trails when appropriate.Observe wildlife respectfully from a distance.Leave natural spaces as they were found.Avoid damaging plants, habitats, or living creatures.Pack out all trash and belongings.Care for shared equipment and materials.
Through daily experiences in nature, children develop a sense of responsibility, gratitude, and connection to the world around them.
Our goal is not simply to learn in nature, but to develop lifelong relationships with and respect for the natural world.

What is risky play and why is it important?

At T4K, we believe that children develop confidence, resilience, sound judgment, and physical competence through opportunities to engage in age-appropriate risky play.
Risky play refers to exciting and challenging activities that allow children to test their abilities, make decisions, and learn to assess and manage risk. Research shows that these experiences support healthy physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development.
We distinguish between:Risk – a challenge that can be identified, understood, and managed by the child with appropriate support.Hazard – a hidden danger that a child cannot reasonably anticipate. Hazards are actively identified and removed or managed by T4K educators.
Examples of risky play may include:Climbing trees and logsBalancing on natural featuresUsing age-appropriate tools under supervisionBuilding forts and sheltersExploring uneven terrainJumping, lifting, carrying, and moving natural materialsEngaging in adventurous physical play
Our educators carefully assess environments and activities to ensure that children are exposed to appropriate challenges while minimizing unnecessary hazards.

Educators support children through observation, coaching, reflective questioning, and guidance rather than directing every action. This approach helps children develop independence, self-awareness, confidence, and responsibility.
While minor bumps, scrapes, wet clothing, muddy boots, and other small mishaps are a natural part of outdoor learning, our goal is to provide a safe environment where children can experience challenge, adventure, and growth.
By allowing children to encounter manageable risks in a supportive setting, we help them build the skills they need to navigate both the natural world and everyday life with confidence and good judgment.

How do you manage safety in the forest?

Nature-based education involves managed risk, which provides valuable opportunities for children to develop independance, confidence, judgment, resilience, and problem-solving skills. Our staff actively supervise children and continuously assess environmental conditions and potential hazards.

Do you offer financial aid?

We believe that all children should have the opportunity to benefit from outdoor experiences and build a connection to nature.
In order to further our mission of environmental justice and inclusivity, we strive to make our outings accessible to all by offering financial support. Financial aid awards range from 10% to 80% of tuition and use the current Family Median Income available from HUD for New Jersey and the Federal Poverty Line to calculate rates. Actual awards are dependent on available funding.
